Henrico man reports brutal attack in Richmond's Shockoe Slip

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A Henrico man claims a night out in Richmond's Shockoe Slip almost cost him his life. He says he was attacked by an angry mob. That victim is speaking out as the search for suspects continues. It happened last Thursday, July 24, 2014 around 2 AM.

The brutal attack left the alleged victim's eyes swollen shut.

"I was angry at first," said the victim who did not want to be identified. "Angry and thankful to be alive. My whole side of my face looked like it was ripped off, but it was mainly from the concrete and the cobblestone."

His wounds are slowly starting to heal after the attack.

"I'm about 6'5 300 pounds," said the victim. "I had a bunch of them on me...busted my legs open and then my head. It was all at once. It happened so quickly. I didn't really have time to defend myself."

The victim says it happened near Cary and Virginia Streets in Shockoe Slip.

"Just want to make it known," said the victim. "Be safe. Be in groups if you are down there."

He says he was walking with two other friends when a group of men yelled something to them. One of the victim's friends felt concerned enough to call 911 and leave the phone in his pocket. Moments later the group allegedly attacked.

"We were three White guys," said the victim. "Maybe we were at the wrong place at the wrong time."

He says he never thought things would escalate to violence.

"Right," said the victim. "Maybe a few words if we turned around and said something, but we weren't looking for trouble. We were just trying to get home safely."

The victim is expected to make a full recovery. Police say they are looking for 4 to 5 suspects who appeared to range in age from 19 to 22. If you have any information call crime stoppers at 804-780-1000.
