SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Police temporarily shut down Angola Rd. between McCord and Holland-Sylvania underneath I-475 in Springfield Township Thursday morning after softball-size pieces of the I-475 bridge over Angola were found on the road below.

A Holland Police officer noticed the chunks of the bridge on Angola.  He then called for backup, prompting the road closure.

One police officer told us the bridge was "literally falling apart," though Theresa Pollick of the Ohio Department of Transportation says there is road work happening on I-475 above Angola, and the concrete which fell could have come from deck work.

Upon investigation there didn't seem to be any major issues with the bridge, Pollick says, but drivers in the area are still uneasy.

"It's kind of dangerous," said Jeff Myers, a golf pro at McDivots. "It makes me a little nervous going past there every day."

"I do travel that a lot," said Dawn Mason, who works at Nature's Corner. "I have my son in the car and just traveling back and forth with him from Spring Meadows, just to find out that pieces of concrete can fall and hit your car and do some damage and harm you is pretty shocking news."

Pollick says ODOT crews installed false work to prevent more concrete from falling. She says as a result of the work being done on 475, along with traffic, some of the concrete on the bridge was loosened, but she assures everyone that the project is safe.

"Every day we have inspectors out there looking at the project to ensure not only safety but the quality of our work," Pollick said. "So what we are going to be doing for the remainder of our construction work is of course be keeping a close eye on all of our work zones as we do, but we want to make sure that the drivers who are out there are safe and our workers are safe as well."

I-475 remained open through the morning, and one lane of Angola was reopened to both directions of traffic around 6:45.  Drivers can avoid the area by taking Hill or Airport Highway.
