Folly officials looking into master plan to relieve flooding

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - When it rains, it floods.

Officials on Folly Beach are working to make sure the town's flooding problem is a thing of the past.

Friday morning, Town of Folly Beach Director of Public Works Kevin Whitsett stood and watched as DOT crews worked to clear debris from ditches on East Central Avenue.

"The drains were just overloaded," he said.  "They had too much to accommodate the rainfall we had."

Whitsett, calling it a temporary fix, is working on master plan to alleviate flooding in the beach town, one that includes an updated drainage system.  He said he's already requested funding from Charleston County to conduct a feasibility study.

"One big plan that gets the water off everybody, not just certain locations," Whitsett said.

Less than a block away, at The Sand Dollar, a social club on Center Street, local bartender Krista Braun showed off a makeshift barrier, the go to fix for businesses working to keep water out and business in.

"I feel like I'm half bartender, half weather girl," she joked.
