Fire chief: vapor seen leaking from train cars not harmful

WESTMINSTER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Emergency officials said there was no danger to the community after train cars were seen leaking a vapor in Oconee County.

Oconee County fire chief Charlie King said someone called 911 after seeing plumes of gas coming out of two Norfolk Southern railcars that was heading northeast on the tracks through Westminster.

The train stopped and a hazmat crew was called in to investigate, King said.

The hazmat crew quickly discovered that the train cars were hauling emptied containers that has residual amounts of carbon dioxide inside.

"The tanks heated up during transportation and the residual carbon dioxide escaped through the ventilation system," King said. "There was no danger to the community or to public health, but we're glad the caller reported it and we checked it out to be certain."
