SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies in Spartanburg County want to warn citizens of a phone scam involving a caller pretending to be a deputy.

According to Lt. Kevin Bobo, a caller claiming to be a deputy with the sheriff's office warrant unit at the courthouse and provides a badge number. The scam artist then tells the victims that he has warrants for their arrest because they signed a paper acknowledging jury duty and then failed to appear. The suspect then says the warrant can be canceled if the victims will buy a prepaid card and then call him and give him the number on the back.

Bobo said these calls are not legitimate. He asks anyone who receives such a call to decline the suspect's request and report the phone call to deputies.
