Woman identified in fatal Springfield fire

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A dozen residents are homeless and one fatality has been reported as the result of an Sunday morning fire in a three-story residential building on Converse Street.

Dennis Leger, aide to Springfield Fire Department Commissioner Joseph Conant, told CBS 3 that 49-year-old Thoa Vu was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the Baystate Medical Center.

Firefighters made their way to the third floor of 25-27 Converse St. after witnesses called authorities at 3:52 a.m. Firefighters found a victim lying on the kitchen floor and proceeded to carry that person down the stairs to medical personnel, who rushed to a nearby ambulance.

Another woman was rescued from the roof of the building where she became stranded. She was later taken down by ladder and was reported unharmed.

Leger said initial witnesses reported the woman on the roof of the building, and responders relayed to fire officials that a second person was still in the building.

Leger confirmed the fire had wiped out the third floor, while the second and first floors sustained heavy water and smoke damage. The Red Cross was on the scene shortly after the fire was put out to assist those left homeless by the fire.

The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad and the state Fire Marshal's Office determined the cause of the fire was electrical and began in a third-floor bathroom.

Leger estimated the damage at $60,000.
