ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -

A role model, a friend, a mentor- that is how Eddie Pope describes Charles Morris, the Millbrook man who made a lasting impact on his life.

"He was just an overall great guy and he really meant something to this town," Pope said.

Charles Morris died Sunday, hours after being hit by a car. Family members say he was on his way home to Millbrook when he was struck and fatally injured.

The crash occurred around 5 a.m. on Fitzpatrick Road, one mile east of Elmore.

Morris, 45, was struck by a 2006 Saturn Ion driven by Joshua Corbett, 23, of Wetumpka.

Morris was transported to Baptist South in Montgomery where he died from his injuries Sunday afternoon.

Corbett was not injured.

Morris' relatives say Corbett waited with him at the scene of the accident for help to arrive.

On Monday, troopers revealed that their preliminary investigation shows that Morris was lying in the roadway when he was hit.

A spokesman for the Alabama Department of Public Safety, Sgt. Steve Jarrett, told WSFA that Morris' vehicle was located some distance away with a flat tire.

The investigation is ongoing as troopers work to piece together how the deadly incident unfolded.  Jarrett said forensic tests are pending. No other details were released.

Morris was popular figure in Millbrook. For years, he welcomed local youth into his family's pool hall on Main Street. The pool hall is now closed but it holds a lot of memories for those who spent time there.

"He gave us better things to do so we wouldn't just be out there getting into God knows what. He showed us what hard work could do for you because he owned his own business and we all wanted that. It's kind of like a part of my childhood died because so much of who I am today is because of going into Charlie's Pool Hall," Eddie Pope said.

Many, like Pope, are paying tribute to Morris' legacy, including on social media.

Kimberly wrote on Facebook: "He kept me out of trouble. You will truly be missed."

Shannon also wrote: "Rest in Peace Charles Morris! You will forever be remembered for your compassion and friendship to the youth of Millbrook.

"There won't be a day go by that I won't think about him. Every game of pool I'll play, I'll think about him. Charlie's a good guy. He's going to be missed by many," Pope added.

The Thirsty Turtle, a Millbrook establishment, is offering free pool this week in honor of Morris.

Troopers don't expect the driver of the car that struck Charles Morris to face charges.

Meanwhile, his family members are working to make funeral arrangements.
