Law enforcement officers beefing up patrols in school zones

MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

As buses were rolling out for the second day of school on Monday morning, Mt. Juliet police were rolling up on unsuspecting drivers.

For the next two weeks, the department is pulling out all the stops looking for violators, doubling patrols and posting speed trailers around school zones.

"A lot of officers really aren't writing the tickets. They're out there just stopping cars and reminding them to be safe in school zones," said Lt. Tyler Chandler with the Mt. Juliet Police Department.

Chandler said the campaign is already a success.

Officers made about a dozen stops on Friday. On Monday morning, they issued 15 citations.

In fact, the department is so serious Chandler said the chief of police himself is making the rounds.

"Motorists need to be mindful of school zones and to be safe in school zones because there are children out there and there are children crossing the street," Chandler said.

Rhonda Reed drives her granddaughter to Mt. Juliet Middle School every day and admits something needs to be done.

"No one lets anyone blend in, and it's that anger thing. It's just not a good way to start your morning," Reed said.

Chandler said drivers need to pay attention, put their phones down and just drive safe.
