MONTGOMERY CO., AL (WSFA) -

The Central Alabama VA is officially expanding, and is hoping to alleviate many frustrations that veterans are experiencing.

A new health care facility is under construction on Chantilly Parkway in East Montgomery to serve as an annex to the Montgomery campus.

A veteran himself, Larry Furlong says he will think twice before he or his dad goes back to the Central Alabama VA.

They went to the VA's Emergency Room when Larry's 80-year-old dad was having a stroke back in June.

"There was a lack of movement in his face, he couldn't speak clearly and was weak and dizzy," Larry said. "We waited 30 minutes, somebody gave him an aspirin, then an hour and a half to two hours went by and still nothing."

Finally, a doctor confirmed his dad had a stroke. But still, more waiting.

"He said we don't have a neurologist at the VA, we'll send you to UAB," Furlong said. "Three and a half hours go by, and still nothing. Thirty minutes later, he says 'We called the ambulance, it'll be here shortly to transport your dad.' It's about six and a half hours after we get there, the ambulance shows up."

That's where this new facility can help.

At a beam signing ceremony held on Wednesday, the Central Alabama VA's director sees hope here.

"If you've been to our ER, it's a confined space, said James Talton. "The biggest difference, is it will be more spacious. Because it's so cramped at the Central Alabama VA, it just feels sometimes tense. All of that will be alleviated now with this new location."

The 112,000 square foot building is not expected to open until Fall of 2015.

In the mean time, veterans like Furlong are left with hard feelings.

"It's frustrating and disappointing."
