Stolen Elmore Co. truck case ends with chase across 3 cities

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A stolen pick up truck sparked a high speed chase that stretched out over 35 miles Friday morning, ending with a crash.

"Usually when we call a 10-100, hot pursuit on somebody, it doesn't last that long, you really don't have miles upon miles of trekking," says Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin. But this one stretched out over three cities.

The story starts with a stolen truck - a 3/4 ton heavy duty pick up from Millbrook. Montgomery police spotted it on Atlanta Highway and tried to pull it over. That's when the pursuit began.

"It actually came up the interstate to the Tallassee exit. There's about a 7 mile trek there before you get to the city of Tallassee where Highway 229 becomes Hwy. 14, the gentleman followed 14 toward Wetumpka." Sheriff Franklin says at times, the chase exceeded 100 miles per hour. Over the course of the pursuit, the truck blew 3 tires.

"I was amazed that something with 3 flat tires could still drive that hard," the sheriff said. Finally, authorities stopped the driver on Hwy. 14, about a half mile east of Fire Tower Road. Sheriff Franklin is counting his blessings no one was hurt.

"He had total disregard for safety, his actions, our actions. We had several people that came up to the scene saying that's the guy that ran them off the road," the sheriff explained.

"He did offer to us at the jail here that he's had a meth problem for about 5 years, and he's obviously burnt up on meth," the sheriff continued.

The driver, 29-year-old Matthew David Bailey, is in the Elmore County Jail facing 10 charges: Receiving Stolen Property 1st, Criminal Mischief 1st, Obstructing Government Operations, Resisting Arrest, Reckless Endangerment, Attempting to Elude, Reckless Driving, General Speeding, Improper Lane Usage, Improper Passing.

The bond for all 10 of his charges adds up to $43,000 and more charges could come from Millbrook and Montgomery Police.

Also, two Elmore County Sheriff's vehicles were damaged in the effort to stop Bailey.
