PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

A fire was sparked Friday evening at the vacant Continental Eagle Corporation gin complex near Bridge Street in Prattville.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and were able to get the blaze under control with hand held fire extinguishers, city officials said.

The cause of the fire and the amount of damage were not immediately known.

The complex closed in 2007 after Continental Eagle merged with Lummus Corporation of Savannah, Georgia. It is part of a more than 30 acre complex of buildings started more than 175 years ago by Daniel Pratt, for whom the city is named.

Three of the large buildings on the site were sold to an Atlanta real estate company in 2012.

There has been talk of turning some of the buildings into loft space apartments overlooking the dam below, but no plan has yet been put into action.
