SOUTHEASTERN, NC (WECT) -
Pender County officials rescued six people by boat due to heavy rain and flooding in the Hampstead area.
According to Pender County Fire Marshal Charles Newman, portions of Highway 17 in Hampstead are now back open after having to be closed to traffic due to standing water on the roadway on Saturday.
Newman said half a dozen people, including an elderly lady who was wheelchair bound had to be evacuated from their homes in the Plantation Pointe Community.
Emergency officials have closed Country Club Drive and Azalea Drive due to a large sinkhole caused by the heavy rains and flooding.
A flood watch remains in effect for all of southeastern North Carolina through Sunday evening.
The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a flood warning for Pender County until 9:15 p.m.
Several roads in Hampstead are considered "impassable" due to standing water over the roads including Country Club Road, Olde Point Road, and King's Landing Road.
The following storm and flooding reports have been issued by the National Weather Service:
-Massive sinkhole reported on Country Club Drive in Hampstead.
-Up to one foot of water on neighborhood streets at Castle Bay Golf Community.
-Belvedere Plantation Golf Course flooded. Overflowing retention ponds. Up to 3 feet of water standing near homes.
Pender County Emergency Officials are working with the DOT about further road closures as the rain passes through on Saturday night and into Sunday.
In Bladen County, there is a lane closure due to high water on Old Lake Road near the Buckhead Fire Department.
