SC State Conducts First Preseason Scrimmage

ORANGEBURG, SC -

South Carolina State held its first scrimmage of the preseason Saturday evening, with the weather shortening the almost the two-hour scrimmage at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

SC State also held its annual Media & Picture Day during the morning session, prior to the evening scrimmage. The Bulldogs started the scrimmage with its main focus on the installation of special teams (kicking and punting) in game-style situations.

"It was the first scrimmage and anytime you are trying something new on offense and defense it's going to be a struggle," said head coach Buddy Pough.

"We didn't get as much in as we had like because of the weather but overall we still have some work to do on both sides of the ball but overall we had some bright spots," said Pough. "The fact that we have been practicing hard this week really played a factor on getting a lot accomplished this week."

Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough said he was extremely pleased that his squad especially some of the newcomers got a chance to see some action in their first outing, however, he noted that he would have to wait until he and his staff viewed the film from the scrimmage to get a true evaluation of how his team did.

"I thought we had some success from time to time running the football," said Pough. "We didn't try and do too much but run the basic schemes on both offense and defense."

The Bulldogs will return to the practice field Monday with two workouts – an early morning session at 9:30 a.m. in full pads and an evening practice at 7:10 in shells.
