MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A Montgomery County resident celebrated her 111th birthday on Monday.

Rachel Thrasher Jones was born on August 11, 1903 in Bullock County to Joe and Nellie Thrasher. The exact city where Jones was born is unknown as she is no longer able to speak.

Mrs. Jones has seen many things over the course of her life including things such as the sinking of the Titanic, World War I, World War II, the Civil Rights movement, The assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Watergate Scandal, and The Vietnam War.

The party was held at the Capital Hill Healthcare facility located on S. Hull Street in Montgomery.

Family members, church members and even fellow facility residents came to celebrate Jones' birthday.

"She has such a kind and sweet spirit," said Detra Whiting who is a nurse at the facility. "Everyone loves aunt Rachel here at the facility. When anyone walks into a room where she is, she brightens up the room."

According to Mrs. Jones' great niece, Ann Menelee, she loved to sing and is a people person. She loved to talk to anyone and everyone.

"Her ability to be as nice as she is and her attitude towards people was exceptional," Menelee said.

Jones' attended St. James Missionary Church in the Waugh Community, and the pastor at the church says she always wore a smile.

"She has always been extremely nice in terms of always smiling," Benjamin Jones said. "She always had a smile on her face, and she was always very pleasant to be around."

Mrs. Jones received letters from President Barack Obama and Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange congratulating her on turning 111-years-old.
