MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A special group is making it's way across Alabama, and on Monday Governor Robert Bentley welcomed the bicycle group to the State Capitol.

This group is riding bicycles from Oregon to Mobile, Alabama in honor of 9-year-old Gabe Griffin.

Gabe suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which is a deadly disease that affects boys by killing their muscles.

The group hopes to raise awareness and funds for DMD in their cross country journey.

"He's 9-years-old today and he's a normal looking little, boy but his muscles are dying on the inside because he's missing a protein, said Scott Griffin, Gabes father. "So, long story short between ten and 12, he'll be in a wheelchair and then 17 to 20 he'll lose his life. However, there is a drug out there. It's been in clinical trial for three years and we're trying to fight to get this drug and I believe together that we can make that happen."
