ADAMSVILLE, AL (WBRC) -

An officer-involved shooting is under investigation in Adamsville after officials say a deputy shot a suspect who tried to run him over.

Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the 5000 block of Cooley Drive near Adamsville at about 3:30 a.m. on Thursday responding to a report of a stolen vehicle.

A deputy spotted the alleged stolen vehicle near Oakleaf Circle in Adamsville. The driver fled when the deputy tried to pull it over and a four-minute chase began.

The sheriff's department says the suspect drove towards the deputy attempting to hit him. The deputy fired a shot to protect himself, according to Chief Deputy Randy Christian.

The suspect continued to drive another mile before stopping in the 2400 block of Scenic Drive when he saw an Adamsville police car ahead of him.

After the suspect stopped and was removed from his vehicles, deputies saw he had been shot in his knee. He was taken to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Christian says the suspect is a 33-year-old white male from Adamsville who has a criminal history that spans 11 years. His name has not yet been released.

Some of his previous charges include robbery, theft, domestic violence and drug charges. He was most recently arrested in April.

People in the neighborhood were woken up by the sound of sirens around 3:30 a.m. Witnesses said they saw officers had blocked in a white van and had their guns pointed toward the van.

The white van was still on the scene on Thursday morning.

"I was shocked. I woke up, the sirens woke me up, I thought it was just the ambulance coming for one of the neighbors, they come down here all the time. I looked out, they was blue lights flashing in the window, and I said that ain't ambulances, that's cops," witness Jeff Northcutt said.

There is another crime scene on Shady Grove Road, but it's unclear if it's connected to the one on Shady Crest Drive and Scenic Road.
