Editorial: "Don't Give Up"

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control, 39,518 Americans committed suicide in 2011 making suicide the 10th leading cause of death in our country.  Putting this number into perspective, this means someone in the United States is taking their own life every 13.3 minutes.

This week a high profile American actor and comedian, Robin Williams, took his own life.  The conversation following the loss is one of sadness, empathy, surprise and concern.  It's a conversation centering on his battles with depression and the primary impact it appeared to have played in his last days.

According to the CDC, depression is involved in two-thirds of all suicides committed each year in our country.  So in order to attack the suicide problem you must focus on the primary reason for suicides: depression.  That is where we need to focus our energy and resources.

If you or someone you know is expressing the signs or symptoms of depression don't give up.  Seek help from family, friends, your church or even your work where services may be provided to help you return to brighter days.

No one ever said life is easy, but it is precious and our hope those suffering will get the help they need and live it to its fullest.
