DALE CO., AL, (WSFA) -

A top to bottom overhaul at the Dale County Courthouse has been going on for several months but not without some challenges. The courthouse was built in 1968 and has not seen many improvements until now.

"We were not ADA compliment, we didn't have proper fire protection, and we didn't have good security," said Mark Blankenship, Dale County Commission Chairman. "It was better for us to take out a bond to do the work on the courthouse rather than continue to spend our general fund money on maintenance."

Since people are still working at the courthouse they had to keep the original cooling and heating system running while installing the new one. That caused work on the roof to be delayed, putting the entire project behind schedule.

"We have had some real challenges with it and I think we are out of the woods with most of that," Blankenship said. "I think most of that is behind us."

Now, that the new roof is on, crews can begin putting the finishing touches on the third floor before moving forward with repairs on the second floor.

The price tag for this face lift is about $2.8 million. The county believes the finished product and the money saved in the process is well worth it.

"We should save about $48,000 a year annually on our electric bill," Blankenship said. "I know the people here at the courthouse they are tired of it already, but I think when we are finished they will be extremely proud of it."

The renovation is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Taxpayers should not expect to see any increases associated with these renovations.
