BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, ALDOT said that the emergency repairs on I-65 southbound at the Daniel Payne exit have been completed.

Deteriorating lanes caused traffic to back up for miles in north Birmingham and Jefferson County.

State troopers say two of the lanes deteriorated while crews were working on the I-22 interchange. Only the left lane is currently open to traffic.

ALDOT spokesperson Brian Davis said crews opened the newly paved road Friday morning and it was just a few hours later when they noticed serious issues.

"Once we started getting these potholes developing, once we started seeing unsafe conditions develop. Unfortunately, you know what you have to do. and that's make an emergency closure that you don't want to make on a Friday afternoon affecting I-65 southbound," Davis said.

Drivers were advised to take Highway 31 as a detour.
