House, Senate extend "short session" into another week

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -

North Carolina legislators failed to complete their primary work session for the year because House members couldn't agree quickly to work through bills that address economic incentives, local sales taxes and funding teacher assistants.

House and Senate leaders left Raleigh late Friday and planned to return Monday afternoon.

House Speaker Thom Tillis and his allies negotiated a deal Friday with Senate counterparts that would allow for passage of legislation that contained economic development initiatives and a cap on sales taxes. The deal also required passage of two other bills, including one that allowed school districts to have more money to pay for teacher assistants.

The effort hit a bump in the road when the House defeated a procedural maneuver on the most substantive bill, prompting Tillis to regroup.
