HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A heavy police presence has shut down Shields Road in Huntsville on Friday night. It happened around 6 p.m.

Police said the situation began when a guest was approached by a maintenance man over some difficulty, apparently smoke in the room, and displayed a gun.

According to witnesses, police dogs were brought onto the scene. Guests in the hotel and employees at nearby businesses were told to evacuate.

Police said the man has a gun but there is no one else in the room with him and not a hostage situation. According to Captain Jeshenry Malone they are considering it not to be a threat to public safety and the man only appears to be a danger to himself.

Our crew arrived on the scene around 7 p.m. and was pushed back to the Texaco off Highway 72, which is still open. They are still working on getting information. We will pass it along as soon as we learn more.
