Blood donors needed to prevent emergency shortage in the Wiregrass

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

About every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion. If the supply isn't there it can be deadly.

"I just feel like I need to do it," said Gregg Ward.

Ward has been a regular blood donor for the past 20 years. Friday he spent part of his day at the Dothan Civic Center giving blood. His donation comes at just the right time. The Wiregrass Region LifeSouth Community Blood Center is working to prevent a shortage.

"It's summer time and every summer we get a little short," said Candice Jordan with Lifesouth Wiregrass Region. "Right now we are 50 units down for the month."

While there is not a critical shortage yet, there is a concern because that could change with just one emergency situation.

"One trauma can completely wipe out the supply," Jordan said. "You just never know what can happen."

Giving just one unit of blood has the potential to save up to three lives. It can be divided into red blood cells platelets and plasma.

"It makes me feel good. You know it could be a kids life or a grown up or a family member that's the reason I do it," Ward said.

While Ward will likely never meet the people who benefit from his donation, he's just thankful to know he made a difference.

If you are interested in giving blood you can set up an appointment by calling 334-792-9977.
