HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Whether it's a touchdown, field goal, extra point, or even a safety, our local student athletes are looking forward to lighting up the scoreboard on Friday nights, and Madison County schools are making sure they do it safely.

Concussions can cut a players career short.

“Its Borderline impossible to eliminate them,” said Michael Stevenson, program manager for Huntsville Hospital.

However, Madison County Schools are doing all they can to prevent them. They have Athletic trainers at every practice.

“The brain will typically either knock against the skull or gets jostled inside the skull, that's a bad thing,” said Stevenson.

If a trainer suspects an athlete suffered a concussion, they administer a computerized test, that test basic brain functions and compare to results to when the athlete took the test in a normal state earlier this year.

“We test them two three days later a week later two weeks later, we test them as many times as possible before we clear them,” said Stevenson.

Stevenson said there is no replacement for an athletic trainer that's at every practice.

“Should something happen when the kids are acting just a little bit off, you have personal relationship with those kids and you can really understand the difference between what's normal for a kid, how they act and what's abnormal,” said Stevenson.

Common symptoms of a concussion are headaches, nausea, dizziness and any kind of loss of memory

“Anything we can do to prevent an injury is what we're here for,” said Stevenson.
