PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

Former Phenix City council member Arthur Sumbry Sr. passed away on Sunday, Aug. 17 around 6:30 p.m. at the age of 73 after battling cancer.

According to Russell County Deputy Coroner Billy Dixon, he was at his home in Phenix City when he died.

News Leader 9's Tyrone McCoy caught up with current council members to talk about Sumbry's life and legacy.

Sumbry was known by many for his funeral home business in Phenix City, but also for his many leadership roles in the community.

Sumbry Sr. was first elected into office in 1983 and served consecutive terms on the Phenix City Council until 2012, even serving as mayor pro-tem from 2008 to 2012.

His service to the city and council are what current city leaders say they will remember and miss most about him.

"I always remember him as a very compassionate person," explains Phenix City Manager Wallace Hunter. "Had a big heart, you know. If -- I always worked with him, he tried to help everybody that he could. Even to a fault. It wasn't anybody that he wouldn't try to help or think that he could do something for and his district always noticed that."

Flags in Phenix City will be flown at half-staff in respect of Arthur Sumbry, Sr. He leaves behind his wife and four children.

At this time funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized. We will share that information as soon as it becomes available.
