WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) -

School has only been in session for a little over a week, and we've already tracked down a teacher that stands out to both parents and students. This week's Class Act takes her lessons beyond your standard textbook and piece of paper.

The pencils have been sharpened and the curriculums assigned.

"They love coming to Gate class because they get to be themselves. They get to work a little bit harder," Carrie Pinckard said.

Pinckard's 3rd and 4th grade Gifted Education Class at Redland Elementary is ready for a new school year.

"I'm just excited," says Kaitlyn Castleberry.

While most children would greet the unknown with apprehension, Kaitlyn welcomes something new, with open arms.

"It's really special, we get to do things you don't normally do in class, like getting to do special worksheets and things that make you really talented," Kaitlyn said.

Students in Miss Pinckard's class have qualified for the program. She identifies them as higher learning thinkers that need extra help perusing their interests.

"We get to think out of the box more," Kaitlyn said.

While Pinckard's approach may be unconventional, the teaching veteran says her main goal is getting her students to think for themselves.

"We don't give grades in our class, so it's all self-motivated, a lot of times I have to get them jazzed up about things they necessarily wouldn't be," Pinckard said.

One thing's for sure, we're "jazzed up" about Miss Pinckard being this weeks, Class Act!
