A federal program available nationwide this year is helping to provide free lunch to all students in some schools, regardless of their financial situation.

Through the USDA's Community Eligibility Provision, schools with a certain percentage of students receiving free or reduced price lunch may opt to provide free lunches to all students in the school.

According to the USDA's website, eligible schools must pay the difference between the level of financial resources allowed by law, and the total cost of operating the program.

About half of the Tuscaloosa City Schools are participating in the program this school year, as well as another program that provides free breakfast in the classroom.

Arcadia Elementary Teacher Sharetta Watkins, who is also the parent of a fifth grader, likes knowing that her students have had balanced meals.

She said she also likes the program as a parent.

"I know, me personally, I was spending almost $50 on my son's lunch every month. So, I appreciate the opportunity, and I know other parents and teachers do the same," she said.
