MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Congressman Mo Brooks gave a pep talk as the new class of the Madison County Republican Executive Committee came together on Monday night, welcoming 20 new members and promising change.

"You guys are on the front lines," Brooks told the assembly.

Representative Mike Ball said the "old guard" and "new blood" clashed too much in the past.

"It's a different tone," he said. "It's like going form offense to defense or defense to offense."

The committee has been rocked by dispute, especially over the controversial issue of common core educational standards. Board members voted to censure school board member Mary Scott Hunter, and threatened to censure state senator Bill Holtzclaw over it, but both were re-elected, and Hunter joined the committee.

"As far as my direction, I won," said Hunter. "Senator Holtzclaw won. It's sort of a decided issue; we're moving on from that issue and we're moving on to other things."

This year, voters also put longtime watchdog Tom Scovill on the board, where he's already challenging the "old guard."

"I hope to see a party that's focused on the things the party is supposed to do, such as recruiting good candidates," Scovill said.

The new committee members said Madison County voters can expect a party that's more appealing and better able to make its case in this fall's elections.

"We can do a lot better job packaging the message, and I believe we will going into November," said Rep. Ball.

"I want more people in the party. I want to have an opportunity to recruit women, minorities, people that want to be part of this Republican Party. It's a big tent and we want them," said Hunter.
