ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -

It's not an emergency per se, but it's something the Kowaliga Volunteer Fire Department is interested in knocking down in short order.

The Elmore County Sheriff's Department confirms it's looking into a situation in which four people, two men and two women, are going door-to-door asking for donations in the Russell Lands subdivision, a neighborhood located just across the Kowaliga Bridge in Eclectic.

The four people are allegedly telling unsuspecting donors that they are raising money as volunteers for the fire department.

This however is not true. According to department leaders, who reportedly sent out letters throughout the community, the fire department is not conducting any sort of door-to-door fundraising campaign.

James Riggins isn't all that surprised by the apparent scam. Riggins says he hasn't been targeted yet.

"I guess the way the economy is, some people will prey on unsuspecting folks," said Riggins.

We're told that one man gave $40, and later regretted it, believing he may have been scammed.

James Riggins drives a school bus and details boats for a living. Armed with this most recent development in Elmore County, Riggins now knows to brush off any attempts to be conned.

Investigators are looking into the matter, and say that for now they're not sure overall how much money has been collected in the alleged scam.
