MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Our editorial earlier last week focusing on the suicide of Robin Williams and the role depression played in his and most all suicides lead to the following feedback on wsfa.com and our WSFA 12 News station Facebook page…here is just a sampling:
Brittany provided the following, "People that have never had depression or know anyone with depression will never understand! That's like saying well you're rich go buy some COMPASSION!"
Barbara responded with, "I understand your editorial was meant and intended to open people's eyes about depression. Depression is a disease or an illness just every bit deathly and devastating as cancer is a disease and fatal illness. As with such illness, there are periods of remission, but with one big difference. In depression, you withdraw from all...everyone, everything. This includes your family, your friends … your world. The last thing you are going to do … is ask for help."
Lastly Melanie writes, "People who are suffering from clinical depression can't stop themselves from giving up. That is the very core of the mental illness called clinical depression. I heard one commentator say that Williams 'took the coward's way out'. Well, that is true in the sense that depression takes the will to live away. The illness is the coward, not the person."
As always, we encourage and appreciate your feedback.
