Columbus group opens weekly bible study in a bar

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Living in the Bible Belt, and having a church on every corner, there's no shortage of places Christians can go to praise God.

However, one group of friends in the Chattahoochee Valley is proclaiming that Jesus went to the sinners, not the other way around. So they decided to change bible study as we know it.

Usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, many Christians head to church for worship service, but this group of believers in Columbus is meeting in one of the most unlikely places. They say it's in an effort to spread the love of Christ, whether over a water or a beer.

"It's about love, the love of God. There's no judgment. no condemnation. If you want to have a drink, while we're in here, it's an open bar... this is not a church," said Arlen Mott, owner of The Hangout.

Mott, along with Fairview Baptist Church youth minister Patt Gilbert, and organizer Ken Hudmon, are three friends who say they are reaching beyond the pews and steeple to spread the Word of God.

"It's a place for broken, hurting people that may never go to the church doors again," Mott said.

Praising over live music and any drink of their choice, believers gather at The Hangout bar in Columbus for the kick-off of "Life Night", a spin on the common term "Night Life".

"We're showing people the love of God," Gilbert said.

Gilbert shared he's done it all living his life in a way that only left him searching for something greater. So when Hudmon called him about starting Life Night, he jumped at the chance.

Hudmon said the event is a judge free zone.

"He's not mad because we drink, he's not mad because we smoke. Smoking does not send you to Hell," Hudmon said.

Some Christians may disagree.

"You can go get a beer, and pray at the same time?" reporter Brittany Dionne asked.

"It's not about that. It's a bar, it's not a church. It's no different than going to the House of Mercy trying to minister or to a missionary, or under the bridge ministering to guy that's got a six-pack or a fifth of Whiskey, and he's drinking it while you share the love of God. It's no different," Mott answered.

Life Night is free to the public.

Worship begins at 7 p.m. every Tuesday night at The Hangout Bar.
