The Birmingham Fire department responded to a report of a house fire on Avenue S in Ensley at 3:37 this morning.
The fire department responded with six engines and two ladder trucks. Officials say the fire is under control but they believe the house is a total loss.
Birmingham Fire Department Battalion Chief Gene Coleman says they have not found anyone inside and the house appears to have be vacant. He says the house did have power and her is a car in the back yard.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Coleman says there have been nine fire related deaths in Birmingham this year and 66 in Alabama. He wants to use this opportunity to urge the public to check their smoke detectors.
