DEATSVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

The Millbrook Police Department is continuing with its search for a missing woman, and is still asking for the public's help locating her.

Thursday, the police department said it was following-up on several leads, though investigators could not specify the nature of the leads in the missing persons case of Anita LaFay Washington, 49.

Washington was last seen by a family member around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at her home on Hilton Circle in Deatsville. The missing woman was the victim of a 2008 attempted murder in which she was shot multiple times while picking up her children outside Prattville Christian Academy. Her ex-husband, Irilmoskomazzerella Washington, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in connection to that shooting. He's been in prison since 2009.

Chief P.K. Johnson says detectives in the police department's Criminal Investigations Unit have been working all angles of the case but said Wednesday there's currently no evidence of foul play or any other reason to believe the woman is in danger.

"We share the family's concern because it is so unusual for Ms. Washington to be out of contact with her family," Johnson said.

Washington's vehicle, which was in the process of being repaired, is accounted for, according to authorities. Millbrook police say they've checked the woman's home, interviewed family and friends, and visited local medical establishments and other facilities that she may have been to in the last day, but without success.

One Place Family Justice Center Director Steve Searcy says Washington is a very stable and loving person who believes she survived the attempt on her life in 2008 to help other women.

"Anita had survived a terrible domestic violence assault. She actually had the bullet still in her body from that event," Searcy said.

Washington became an advocate and has traveled nationally to speak to women. That's why her disappearance is so hard for those who knew her well to process.

Neighbors say it's unusual for Washington to go anywhere without someone, especially her family knowing.

"We are definitely praying that God is in control of that and taking care of her. I have an awesome prayer team at Centerpoint in Prattville, and I know that they are on top of it and everybody on this street and we look forward to seeing Anita come back," Deatsville resident Lara Oliver said.

Anyone who may have seen Washington or that is aware of her whereabouts is asked to contact the Millbrook Police Department at 334-285-6832 or they can utilize the secret witness line at 334-285-8500.
