MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama State Department of Education released the ACT report on Wednesday.

The report shows how Alabama students fared on the ACT, and where they stack up compared to the rest of the nation. The report reveals our state still has some work to do.

Alabama's average composite score for public school graduates was 20.3, which is up from 20.1 in 2012.

The national average was a score of 21, so Alabama students are still lagging behind the national average.

State Superintendent Tommy Bice acknowledged that on Wednesday, saying there is room for improvement but the state is heading in the right direction.

The ACT serves as a bench mark in determining student's readiness for college. This year, the state paid for 11th grade public school students to take the ACT.

The report also showed most students are undecided about their college major.
