Montgomery Police now have a suspect in custody in the city's 20th murder of 2014. They say the deadly shooting on the city's north side, that claimed the life of 27-year-old Durrell Bruce, was the result of an ongoing dispute.

Vickie Bruce says her son Durrell was a man focused on his future and his family. He was planning to marry his fiance Wakisha in a few months.

"I miss my son so much. He didn't deserve this at all," Bruce said. "He was a hard working man. He rapped. He had a CD coming out. He didn't bother anyone. He was very sweet, very quiet."

Now the couple's one year old daughter Durriyah is left wondering why her father disappeared.

"She didn't deserve to have her father taken away from her. She will never see her father again and she's only one years old and her father loved her with all his heart," Vickie Bruce told WSFA.

Durrell Bruce was fatally shot in North Montgomery off of Upper Wetumpka Road Thursday.

Montgomery police responded to Claudette Colvin Drive and Marie James Court shortly before 4 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting.

Bruce's fiancee, Wakisha Ruggs, said they were picking up a lawn mower when shots rang out.

"I saw Durrell leaned over like he fell out of the car or like he was out of the car and fell right there at the door. I tried to go to him but the officers stopped me," Ruggs said. "My baby was with me the whole time sitting there crying wondering why her daddy is on the ground."

Bruce was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.

Michael Miller, 22, turned himself in to MPD detectives Friday. He's now charged with Bruce's murder.

Ruggs says Miller is her cousin and that Miller and several other men who she grew up with had threatened violence before. Vickie Bruce says the men warned the couple that they would shoot at them every time they saw them. The family members did not elaborate further on the reason for such animosity.

Those who live in the neighborhood where the fatal shooting happened say they're tired of people turning to violence to sort out their problems.

"For this to hit close like this, it really doesn't make any sense because we are losing our children and we are losing them steadily, steadily and we're really fighting a losing battle and it's not necessary. We all have to come together and we all have to be family," said Geraldine Miller. She was at work when the shooting happened but she says it brought back memories of when her brother was shot and killed in 2006.

Bruce's family shared the same sentiments.

"It wasn't worth it. Whatever the issue might be, there's better ways to handle a situation then to just say guns and fight, guns and fight," Ruggs said. "How am I going to tell my daughter that her daddy is gone and he was killed by somebody we were close to?"

"From a mom's point of view, we have so much hatred going on out there and people fail to realize that we're here today and gone tomorrow. We have to come together as one and stop all this violence. It doesn't make sense," Vickie Bruce added.

Michael Miller is being held on $75,000 bond in the Montgomery County Detention Facility.

Durrell Bruce's family, meanwhile, is in the process of making funeral arrangements.

Montgomery police say their investigation is ongoing. No other details were released.
