Con artists exploit death of actor Robin Williams

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

It's unimaginable to think that someone would try to profit off of someone's else's death... but some crooks will stop at nothing to steal your money or in this case your information as well.

Since the death of actor Robin Williams, at least one scam has reared it's ugly head.

It's called -the click bait.-

The con artist exploits the public's interest with online stories, pictures and social media links that promise sensational headlines.

And unfortunately, they are using Robin Williams as the bait right now.

Scammers may impersonate the victims or family members on social media... sell memorabilia, often promising that some of the proceeds will go to charity.

They may even post a link to what you think is sensational footage or photos.

"It may be an article that a friend is offering and it could be that their account has been hacked into and it's just a ploy to get you to click on it that will take you elsewhere," said Michele Mason with the Better Business Bureau.

And if you fall for it, any of these can lead to malware being downloaded on your computer or smart phone.

That can lead to sharing of personal information that can leave you open to identity theft or excessive spamming.

Scammers also post sensational or emotional content as a way of collecting "likes" and comments on a facebook account... they then sell the account for profit.

Here are some things to do to make sure you don't get hooked on the -click bait scam-...

Don't take the bait. Stay away from promotions of exclusive, shocking or sensational footage.

Remember you can always hover over a link to see it's true destination.

Don't trust your friends online.Just because the email appears to originate from their email address, they could have been hacked.

And report any scam you come across on social media to the appropriate platform.
