OVERTIME: Lots of questions for champion Lancers

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

And now it's Sammy's time.

Or Slingin' Sammy as he is admirably known by his Lancer teammates.

Senior Sammy Muniz will lead Salpointe Catholic under center Friday night as the Lancers begin defense of their Division II State Championship in a home game against Sierra Vista Buena.

Head coach Dennis Bene has a lot of unknowns on offense including his signal caller who waited patiently behind the departed Andrew Cota for two seasons.

The Lancers will look to continue their tradition of power football by switching All-State linebacker and Nevada commit Taylor Powell to the tailback position.

He'll play both ways as will top recruit Justin Holt who will lead both the offensive and defensive lines along with senior Julian Arechaga on the defensive side and Dylan Eickmeyer and Riley Campbell down front on offense.

The receivers will be interesting. They are a young group. Gone are UA recruits Cam Denson and Kaelin Deboskie. One to watch is freshman Jarmaye Joiner, who's future might be at quarterback after this season.

Powell will lead the middle of a defense that held opponents to just 53 points during the 2013 regular season but like the receiver position lacks experience on the back end.

Kickoff at Doherty Stadium is 7 p.m.
