EVENDALE, OH (FOX19) -

Crews were back at the scene of a grain elevator explosion Saturday after fire reportedly rekindled inside the structure.

The explosion happened Friday afternoon at the Bunge North America facility, located in the 2800 block of East Sharon Road near the border of Evendale and Sharonville (map). The facility supplies resources to livestock, poultry and food service industries.

When authorities arrived to the facility on Saturday, they found smoke coming form the rail pit that runs under the elevator. Due to the extreme heat and humidity, crews had rotate between 12 companies contain the fire again, according to officials.

The explosion on Friday blew out the grain elevator's windows and was felt hundreds of yards away by employees in nearby businesses.

A FO19 NOW viewer who works near the facility described the moment as a "loud noise, the building shook and electric went off for a moment."

All employees were safely evacuated and accounted for, according to Company spokesperson Deb Seidel.

Evendale Fire Chief Michael Hauck says the fire potentially started in a dust collector then spread to the elevator, which is known as the "hen house."

"More than likely it was a dust explosion and when it shook the building, it let all the other dust loose within the hen house which subsequently the second explosion occurred," said Chief Hauck.

Investigators are working to figure out what exactly caused the incident in the first place.

Grain elevators are facilities where grains are received, stored and distributed, according to the Environmental Protection Agency website.

Several factors can lead to an explosion inside of a grain elevator. According to the Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Agency, layers of dust in a confined space, overheating as well as an adequate oxygen supply can trigger an explosion.

FOX19 Investigates team found there have been more than 500 grain elevator explosions from 1976 until 2011, according to documents from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Those explosions caused 670 injuries and 184 deaths.

The Evendale facility was formerly owned by Central Soya, which was acquired by Bunge North America in 2002, Seidel said.
