JEMISON, AL (WBRC) -

A Jemison man is behind bars after police seized 786 marijuana plants, with an estimated value of $1.5 million, from a home in Chilton County.

Forty-three-year-old Aaron Rueter was taken into custody after Jemison police raided a home on County Road 5 near Highway 191 on Thursday.

Rueter faces several charges including trafficking and manufacturing of marijuana.

Nearby neighbors were shocked when they heard the news.

"Pretty close to here. I didn't want nothing to happen here. I'm too old for that stuff," Alberta Archie said.

Archie wasn't the only one who didn't know what was going. Law enforcement was also in the dark.

"We had no idea," Jemison Police Chief Shane Fulmer said.

Fulmer said from the ground you couldn't see anything. The fences helped camouflage the plants that were growing.

The plants would have probably gone unnoticed, had it not been for the Alabama State troopers who fly over communities looking for this sort of illegal growing.

"The eradication team, they do a good job flying. And you'd be surprised at how much marijuana growing they actually find," Fulmer said.

It was a find so large that it shocked many in the town of Jemison, but one Chief Fulmer is grateful for.

"It is a substantial amount of marijuana that we know won't end up on the streets," Fulmer said.

The drugs were taken to the forensic lab in Montgomery.
