HOUSTON CO., AL (WSFA) -

The Labor Day weekend is considered one of the most traveled holidays of the year. Law enforcement agencies across state lines are partnering up to keep everyone safe on the roadways this weekend.

With lights flashing, Law enforcement officers from Alabama, Georgia, and Florida caravanned into the Florida Welcome Center as part of the kick off of the "Hands Across the Border" event.

"It doesn't stop at the city limits or the county line or the state line," said Harris Blackwood, Georgia Governors Office of Highway Safety Director. "The commitment is universal for this region, so that the roads are safe for those that use them."

This campaign was first launched 23 years ago in Georgia. Now six states participate, including Alabama. Joining hand in hand the mission is to combat impaired driving over the Labor Day holiday.

"If you drink a drink or two, you may not even think you are impaired," said Maj. Warren Fast with the Florida Department of Public Safety. "It doesn't take much to get you to that level where you are impaired and shouldn't be behind the wheel."

"By having such a high visibility, a high turnout, of not just the Alabama State Troopers but all local law enforcement as well as our neighboring states, it sends an important message to the public," said trooper Kevin Cook with the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

Local police, sheriff's deputies and state troopers will be setting up checkpoints throughout the region over the Labor Day weekend. While the main focus of hands across the border is to crack down on those that choose to drive under the influence, authorities will also be looking for those that don't follow the speed limit, aren't wearing seat belts, and are distracted by their cell phones.

"Just be a responsible driver," said Cook. "Take the task of driving seriously. All it takes is a split second and you could end your life or change your life and someone else's life as well."

With traffic fatalities in Alabama, Georgia and Florida down in comparison to this time last year, everyone is working to prevent that number from increasing during this Labor Day weekend.

The Labor Day holiday campaign will officially begin Friday at six p.m. and end on Monday at midnight.
