HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Police Department and Madison Police Department responded to a robbery call on University Drive at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

An off duty Madison Police Officer stated that a man with a gun approached him and demanded his personal property.

The officer was able to pull his weapon and fire two shots at the man.

It is unknown at this time if the suspect was hit.

The suspect was seen leaving the area in a dark colored SUV.

The officer was not injured during the robbery, and the investigation is still ongoing.

Since he was off duty, we will not release the officer's name. However, we have learned that he has been in law-enforcement and worked as a member of the department for the past 18 months, according to the Madison Police Department.

During the past 18 months, he has received two Meritorious Awards. One award was for attempting to save a five-month-old by using CPR and the second was for helping an elderly man escape a burning house.
