BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham Mayor William Bell will travel to Ferguson, Missouri later this week to represent the African American Mayors Association, which he currently leads.

The group had asked him to consider going to the town to help diffuse the tense situation there.

Clashes between some protestors and police have calmed down since a police officer allegedly shot and killed unarmed teenager Michael Brown.

The mayor says continuing peace will involve an important factor.

"I think the biggest key is transparency. To make sure people understand what the police role is in the community and the police understand what their role is in the community," he told us by phone.

Bell also said he will work with leaders in that area to develop a long term plan for Ferguson including programs focused on teenagers.
