Letter to Tom Joyner: Don't come to RVA

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

There is surprise twist in the controversial push to bring baseball to Shockoe Bottom. A local group is now asking national radio host Tom Joyner not to make a planned trip to Richmond.

The Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality suggest the trip is a veiled effort to drive public opinion on the stadium.

"A lot of folks are going to be taking off that day," said local radio personality Clovia Lawrence about Tom Joyner's planned trip to RVA.

Lawrence is hosting an event with Joyner.

"Solely for the pink purpose party and the fight against breast cancer," said Lawrence who says there are no plans to discuss baseball. "It's going to be all about early detection is key...saving the ta-tas."

The Defenders of Freedom, Justice and Equality sent an open letter asking the nationally syndicated radio host to reconsider his visit because of Lawrence's apparent support of bringing a baseball stadium to Shockoe Bottom.

"I support economic development coming to Shockoe Bottom," said Lawrence. "But most importantly I support the heritage site."

The proposed stadium would sit blocks away from the historic Lumpkin's Slave Jail Preservation site.

"My fear is the loss of our history," said Ana Edwards with the Defenders Sacred Ground Project.

Edwards notes the plans call for a sunken stadium.

"A sunken stadium means you are going to disrupt any archaeological find that is there," said Edwards who joined other Richmonders in drafting the letter to Joyner. "We've asked him not to come in consideration of what it could like."

The group takes issue with the fact that Lawrence hosted meetings about the stadium with Mayor Dwight Jones.

"And I said mayor we have some persons who support and oppose," recalls Lawrence. "He wanted to come out. That's why he was in attendance. I am not a campaign manager or spokesperson for any group or organization."

At last check, the event is still planned for Monday, October 6th. Will keep you posted on any new developments.
