MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery Area Food Bank is celebrating the grand opening of its newly-expanded facility on Trade Center Street. The expansion is more than 2 years in the making and was desperately needed for the rapidly growing needs that the food bank serves.

The official ribbon cutting was held Thursday morning with Governor Robert Bentley and Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange on-hand for the ceremony.

"We can indirectly go through government, and it does play a role," Governor Bentley said, "but the most important thing we can do is care about our neighbors and have organizations like this that cares about the people of these 35 counties, who do worry about if they go to bed hungry at night."

In 2010, MAFB responded to an urgent request from the national food bank organization Feeding America to absorb an additional 10 desperately-under served and poverty-stricken Alabama counties. Now, the food bank supports 800 community agencies in 35 of Alabama's 67 counties, a geographic region crisscrossing the entire state from Georgia to Mississippi.

For the past 3 consecutive years the annual distribution center has exceeded 20 million pounds of food assistance. This expansion brings with it to nearly 24,000 square feet of new space, including a new freezer and cooler space. It also hosts a volunteer service center and more office space, but the biggest portion of the space is going to the shipping and receiving areas.

The expansion was made possible through a $2 million capital campaign.
