'Cops' crew member dies after being shot by police

Bryan Dion, a 38-year-old crew member for the TV show "Cops," was shot and killed Tuesday night while filming a shootout between Omaha police and a robbery suspect at Wendy's.

The Omaha police chief said on Wednesday the robbery suspect fired first, who was armed with a pellet gun that they thought was a real handgun. Authorities said they had no choice but to respond.

Dion, an audio technician, was hit once in the entryway when the suspect tried to flee, police said. He was wearing a bulletproof vest but was hit in the arm. The robbery suspect was also killed.

Bryce, of Boston, is the first crew member of the long-running TV show to be killed while filming police in action, executives with the show's production company said. Police identified the robbery suspect as 32-year-old Cortez Washington, who was on parole from Missouri for a robbery conviction.
