State Police extend presence in N.O. through November

Dozens of Louisiana state troopers credited with helping make the French Quarter safer will stick around a while longer - for at least three more months.

They arrived here 10 weeks ago after a mass shooting on Bourbon Street, but now there's a new commitment to keep troopers in New Orleans beyond the previously imposed Labor Day deadline.

"We're fluid," said state police Col. Mike Edmonson. "I told the chief this morning, if he needs the calvary, we're coming."

Edmonson said his officers have been effective, making more than 500 arrests, recovering 27 stolen vehicles and seizing 45 illegal weapons.

"Those suspects are not on the streets, and hopefully quality of life is getting better," said New Orleans interim police Superintendent Michael Harrison.

Residents said they've noticed a difference but worry that State Police are now carrying the load in the Quarter.

"We don't seem to see as many NOPD," said resident Frankie Vivid, who complained that the troopers appear to have supplanted regular officers. "It's great to have the help, but they need to be help - not the only thing."

Edmonson was pretty open-ended about his new commitment, and he said troopers could actually remain here beyond November.

Between 50 and 100 troopers will remain, spreading throughout the city as needed.
