SUMITON, AL (WBRC) -

Dozens attend a public meeting on Thursday to discuss the future use of a mine along the Black Warrior River.

Alabama Department of Environmental Management hosted the meeting at Bevill State Sumiton.

It's the first public meeting before the organization decides on whether to reissue a permit for Shepard Bend Mining company to use a portion of the River to dump waste.

It applied for a reissuance in 2013 and hasn't been permitted by ADEM since 2008.

Many voiced opposition while others showed signs wanting the company to stop mining on the Black Warrior River citing reasons they believe would harm drinking water and other environmental impacts on the River.

"We're hoping that when this process is finished we can move forward and address what comments we receive." ADEM spokesperson Jerome Hand said.

Brian Pond opposes mining and said, "Don't strip mine next to our water. I have no faith in ADEM that they are doing the right thing and that they are taking the proper precautions."

ADEM says they will looked at every comment from tonight's meeting plus other comments delivered to the agency before reaching its decision.
