SHELBY COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A huge adoption event is happening at the Shelby Humane Society during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The shelter's goal is to place all of their adoptable pets in forever homes. It's all part of the final days of a $100,000 challenge.

For the last three months, employees and volunteers for Shelby Humane have been battling it out with 49 other shelters across the country for the Rachel Ray ASPCA 100K Challenge.

The only way to win the grand prize money is to break the record for number of animals saved during the months of June, July and August.

Since the start of the challenge, Shelby Humane has saved 679 lives.

"This is our last opportunity to get the word out there about what we've been doing," explained Meghan Weyman who oversees adoption at the shelter.

Weyman says they wanted to have fun during the challenge's final stretch.

"We thought 'red carpet' would be a great idea," she added.

That's how the idea for the Red Carpet Extravaganza was born.

On Saturday and Sunday the shelter will have special pricing on adoptions. For those who dress to the nines in their red carpet garb, they will receive an extra discount.

The goal is to get the shelter's 180 cats and dogs adopted over the weekend for their best shot at winning the prize money, money that Weyman says would go a long way.

"I can't even imagine all that we can do with it because that's such a large sum all at once. But there's so much that needs to be done. It can make a huge impact," she said.

But even if Shelby Humane doesn't make it out on top, Weyman says taking on the challenge is still worthwhile.

"Even if we don't win, every single animal that got into a good home, that is what this was all about," Weyman said.

The Red Carpet Adoption Extravaganza was on Saturday and Sunday from noon to midnight.

For those who cannot adopt but still want to help, you can vote for Shelby Humane for the challenge's Community Engagement Award. Visit Vote To Save Lives and select Shelby Humane from the list.
