ONEONTA, AL (WBRC) -

Fire officials had to shut down a portion of Highway 231 in both directions due to a fire on Monday.

Three different fire departments battled the fire at Davis Gunworks, located at 47370 Highway 241 in Oneonta.

According to our reporter on the scene, the gun shop appears to be a total loss.

What caused this fire is still under investigation, but the fact that it is out is only possible because someone ran inside this burning building and pulled out the gun powder.

Oneonta Fire Chief Arthur Willis won't say who went back in the building, but he said had the gunpowder still been inside firefighters would not have been able to be as close as they did.

Chief Willis said firefighters still had to use caution because of some ammunition still in the building. He said they could hear it popping inside during the fire.

This gun shop is in the Straight Mountain Fire Department's district, which is a volunteer department.

But Willis said his crews was well equipped to help with this particular fire.

"We train on this type of fire, we've had recent training on this type of fire and what to expect when you have live ammunition," he said.

According to the shop's Facebook page, they sell and restore firearms as well as manufacture and sell ammunition.

Officers with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the state fire marshal were also on the scene on Monday.
