More hot, steamy days ahead before rain chances increase next weekend

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

As we prepare to kick off a short work week the weather headline will continue to feature very hot and steamy weather conditions.

You may encounter some patchy fog during the early morning drive on Tuesday but rain should not be an issue for the start of the day.

The combination of rising temperatures and moisture will make it feel more like mid 90s by lunchtime. Temperatures will be peaking near 100 during the afternoon.

Some areas will experience some relief in the form of isolated showers and thunderstorms. Some of the cells could be rather potent with frequent lightning and gusty winds. High resolution models suggest the better coverage of afternoon pop-ups on Tuesday will be to the northwest.

MORE STORMS LATER IN THE WEEK: In the short term, our weather setup will be dominated by high pressure centered to the east. This will limit the number of showers and storms through Thursday. In the long term however, models are in better agreement that a cold front will reach our state over the weekend. This will bring a big increase in the coverage of thunderstorms for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. A few of the storms could approach severe levels with strong winds and frequent lightning. When you review your tailgating check-list this week, be sure to pack the rain gear.

TROPICAL DEPRESSION FORMS: The fifth tropical depression of the 2014 Atlantic Season has formed over the Bay of Campeche. This system is expected to track northwest towards Mexico so no worries if you have a trip planned to the Gulf Coast. There is a chance this could become Tropical Storm Dolly before making landfall. Join us on Fox6 for track updates plus more details on the rising storm threat for later in the week.
