HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Alabama is the least bike-friendly state in the country, according to a report by the League of American Bicyclists.

The ranking is based off legislation and enforcement, policies and programs, infrastructure and funding, education and encouragement and evaluation and planning. [Click here to see the LAB's report in full.]

Many cyclists in the Tennessee Valley were not surprised to hear where Alabama fell, on the heels of the Monday crash between a vehicle and cyclists that left one man dead and another in serious condition.

“We have seen problems on the roads,” Spring City Cycling Club board member Dean Della Pella said. “I think we all know someone that has been injured, or killed while riding.”

Alabama is one of 15 states with no specific law for passing a cyclist. Many states have a 3 or 4-foot minimum passing distance law in effect.

Blevins Bicycle Company owner Matt Blevins said he thinks tougher legislation could help make the roads safer for cyclists.

“Usually when a driver hits a cyclist, they don't even get a ticket,” Blevins said. “Usually there's no fine, there's no jail time and so why would you be careful?”

Blevins said he doesn't think drivers realize that even clipping the side of a cyclist could injure them. He said he and other cyclists are subject to resentment - even anger - by just being on the road.

"I don't know what it is; I don't know why people are so angry at cyclists. I've personally had things thrown at me and been yelled at, swerved at by cars, and cussed out just for riding my bike to work," Blevins said.

Some drivers we spoke to said cyclists slow down traffic and should not be allowed on the same roads as cars - relegated only to specially-marked bike lanes, while others said everyone should look out for each other and respect each others' ability to use the roadways.

Review recommended safety tips and statistics before sharing the road.
